Ellowyn is one of the Tainted, magicless servants in the worlds who have been cast out by society for their lack of connection to the elements. Ellowyn's family tried to help her and instilled in her more confidence than one typically sees of someone of her station. When she is assigned to Zelene, they become fast friends since Zelene doesn't believe in the societal hierarchy that treats Ellowyn as though she is cursed or diseased.
